The Canadian arts environment is changing. This is the result of many factors, some of which are: the resilient renaissance of Indigenous artists; the cultural waves from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action; new funding programs at the Canada Council for the Arts and a growing, sustained interest in Indigenous performance coming from multiple arts audiences — both Indigenous and non-Indigenous.

A Shifting Landscape is a practical, intensive, day-long journey, looking at presenting the work of Indigenous performing artists. Using four modules throughout the day, France and Chris delve into the complex issues of colonial history, presenting protocols and Indigenous performance practices — both customary and contemporary. They will facilitate sometimes difficult, small group discussions and workshop exercises that elaborate current concepts such as conciliation/reconciliation, Indignity, decolonization and Indigenous artistic sovereignty.

What do all these terms actually mean when it comes to the performing arts? About France Trépanier and Chris Creighton-Kelly France Trépanier is a visual artist, curator and researcher of Kanien’kéha:ka and French ancestry, who is currently Aboriginal curator at Open Space Arts in Victoria BC. France is also co-chair of the Indigenous Program Council at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Chris Creighton-Kelly is an interdisciplinary artist, writer and cultural critic born in the UK with South Asian/British roots. Chris also works as an arts consultant for governments, cultural institutions and arts organizations. Together France and Chris give lectures, workshops and public presentations across Canada. They were the inaugural recipients of the Audain Aboriginal Curatorial Fellowship at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. They are authors of Understanding Aboriginal Art In Canada Today, commissioned by the Canada Council for the Arts. RSVP here!
