From the Artistic Animateur

Welcome to the opening show of RCAT’s 2026-27 Season! Each show this Season is, in some way, about a struggle to survive; our characters battle with mental illness, with hidden identity, with shame, with a global pandemic, with a literal battle between countries. When the world is dark or confusing, unkind or frightening, these characters push back.

I’ve loved this show since I initially saw a preview performance at Perchance. Director Allison Kelly’s interpretation of the play, and star John Sheehan’s disarming relationship with the audience, make for a magical theatrical experience.

If I were to make a list of brilliant things, as the character who you’re about to meet does, this production would be among them.

Enjoy the show!
~Meghan Greeley

From the Director

Thank you for coming to see Every Brilliant Thing. It’s been a pleasure to work on this play with John and the team. I’ve been hoping for a chance to work on this play for many years. I hope, after seeing the play, you’ll understand why. The play deals with deep sadness. Despair. Depression. The play doesn’t offer a solution. For some, there is no solution. What it hopes to do is highlight some goodness. I like to think of the play as a promise that goodness does not disappear.

Of course, every play needs an audience. This play needs you more than any play I’ve encountered. Without you, the audience, there is no one for the actor to create the stories with. There are no voices to buoy him up. There’s no one for him to fight for. I appreciate you immensely for participating in this act of community. I hope you’ll allow yourself to experience a surge of delight when you hear the voices of your fellow audience members listing brilliant things. My wish is that you’ll experience the play in the way we intended: as a gentle push to see the things around you that glimmer; the brilliant things that make up the world around us. We invite you to leave a little note with your brilliant thing when you leave. The growing list offers hope to people who need it, which is all of us sometimes, isn’t it? My sincerest thank you for being here, Audience. You are my brilliant thing.
~ Al

From the Artistic Producer, Perchance Theatre

In a world where community, kindness, and coming together in support of each other is becoming almost radical, Every Brilliant Thing is an antidote to apathy, it lowers guards and raises spirits. It reminds us that even the smallest things can bring joy, and that we don’t have to look any farther than an ice cream on a hot day, or your favourite song on a record. That there is connection in shared laughter, and compassion in shared experience.

And what better show to mark the first official partnership with our friends at RCAT, the town mouse to our country mouse, theatre makers bringing community together, together.

I look forward to counting brilliant things with you all. Thank you for
joining in.
~ Danielle Irvine

Join Us for the Long Hall!

RCA has embarked upon an ambitious fundraising campaign to build on its remarkable history. Our commitment to the pillars of Live, Local, and Creative, have resulted in some of our province’s greatest theatrical works, by artists who have gone on to national acclaim.

We offer meaningful engagement and full expression of the diverse voices that make up our province today: some have been here for many years, some we are just welcoming now, and some were here long before us.

We are seeking investment to continue telling our provinces unique stories in a facility that is both historic and yet fully equipped to meet the needs of today’s creative producers and the audiences that gather to experience their work.

Specifically, RCA is seeking funds to deliver on three important and necessary objectives: Live Theatre, Capital Improvements, and Building a Creative Workforce, with the ultimate goal of raising $500,000.

To date we have raised over 20% of those funds, starting with a most generous donation from the Perlin Family Trust. Join us to ensure that live theatre, of the caliber RCA is known for, continues its remarkable history.

For more information about this campaign and how to get involved please contact Suzanne Mullett at generalmanager@lspuhall.ca.
