Perfect Day

From the Artistic Animateur

Welcome to the National Presentation of RCAT’s 2025-26 Season, Kevin McDonald Superstar!

Last year when Kevin was in town performing a show at the Black Sheep, Andy brought him by the Hall to see our beloved and historic venue. Suzanne Mullett (our steadfast General Manager) went to see Kevin perform a few days later. When she arrived at the venue, he was outside, wrapped around a lamppost. You never quite know what to expect with Kevin McDonald, and his rock opera—and his process in mounting it each time—is a prime example. He flies into town, rehearses with a group of strangers once or twice, and then it’s lights up. It’s spontaneity epitomized.

In a Season focused on new voices and intergenerational connections, the uniqueness of this Presentation provided the perfect fit for RCAT: the ability to have two Canadian legends, Kevin and our own Andy Jones, alongside a multi-talented and multi-disciplinary group of local artists and musicians. I’m particularly thrilled about the bicoastal cast: two of the artists, Nick Hamlyn and Allison Crowe, hail from my hometown of Corner Brook. It’s a pleasure to welcome them to the LSPU Hall.

Thanks for joining us, and I hope you’ll enjoy what I know will be a very wild ride.

Kevin McDonald

Playwright/Director/Producer

Comedian, actor, writer and director Kevin McDonald founded “The Kids in the Hall” with friend Dave Foley, after they met in Toronto at Second City, and the television series ran from 1988-1995. In the troupe’s television series and stage shows, he portrays several popular recurring characters, such as the King of Empty Promises, Sir Simon Milligan, and Jerry Sizzler. McDonald went on to appear in a variety of films including Boy Meets Girl, Lilo & Stitch, “Lilo & Stitch: The Series”, and Epic Movie.

On television, he has appeared on “The Martin Short Show,” “Ellen,” “That ‘70s Show,” “Seinfeld,” “Friends,” “NewsRadio,” “MADtv,” “Arrested Development,” and “Corner Gas.” McDonald has also done voice work for various animated series, including Nickelodeon’s “Invader Zim,” “The Angry Beavers,” “Catscratch,” and “Clerks: The Animated Series.” He also played an imaginary friend named Ivan in the episode ‘Sight For Sore Eyes’ on “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,” appeared in the music video for “Roses” by Outkast, and made an appearance in “Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show.”

In 2006 McDonald hosted a CBC Television special, featuring several of Canada’s best-known sketch comedy troupes. “Sketch with Kevin McDonald” won a Canadian Comedy Award (Best Taped Live Performance – The Minnesota Wrecking Crew). He was recently at the Just for Laughs Festival with the reunion of Kids in the Hall, and also with his show “Hammy and the Kids” with Craig Northey, based on his two dysfunctional families, his father (“Hammy”) and the Kids in the Hall, as well as “Death Comes to Town” on CBC.

Along the way, Kevin was also in the movies, Sky High and Galaxy Quest. He did his podcast from 2016 to 2020. Just recently, he and the Kids in the Hall did another season of their sketch show for Amazon Prime. He has also done a bunch of things that he forgets. And the world is better off for that.

Andy Jones

St. John’s born Andy Jones is wellknown as an actor, author, member of the comedy troupe CODCO, and for his stories as Uncle Val. His work has been greatly influenced by the folklore, history and people of this province. He has toured Canada with his six one-man shows AND, he even worked as a writer for one season of “Kids in the Hall “… (Although they never used any of his material!… But they were very kind to him… And he was well paid…) Andy Jones also starred in some well-known local film productions such as “Extraordinary Visitor”, The Adventure of Faustus Bidgood” (which he co- wrote and co-directed), “Rare Birds”, and “Heartless Disappearance into Labrador Seas”. Andy is so delighted to be working with Kevin MacDonald tonight.

Allison Crowe

Corner Brook’s Allison Crowe is an accomplished singer-songwriter, musician, actor and writer – from recording for her own original albums (http://allisoncroweband.com), creating music for documentaries (Ashley MacDonald’s “September 7, 2012”) and feature films (Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead), film composition (Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon) to performing on stage (Squeamish directed by Adam Brake, Hard Ticket Theatre’s The Weir directed by Mark Bradbury, GMTF multiple seasons including Supper Club by Willow Kean and directed by Nick Leno, various roles in Newfoundland Rocks which she co-wrote with Adam Brake, The Birds directed by Varrick Grimes, Jewel directed by Nicole Rousseau and Bingo Ladies directed by Pamela Halstead and Jerry Etienne) – she’s been an active multi-faceted artist since the 1990’s.

Christopher Dunne

Christopher Dunn is a Bass-Baritone and Comedian from St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador. He recently graduated from The University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Music specializing in Vocal Performance. Previous work includes engagements with Opera On The Avalon, Manitoba Opera, and Wonderbolt Circus. He performs across the country to sold out audiences with his musical improv band, Mundane Problems, which improvises songs about your mundane problems.

Christa Borden

Christa Borden loves Kevin McDonald, Andy Jones, and—above all—Dolly Parton, so she’s feeling pretty delighted with herself these days. In November 2025, Christa launched Christa Borden Productions and debuted her first sketch musical, A Jolly Dolly Christmas, at the Majestic Theatre. Written, directed, produced, and starring Christa, the show played to sold-out audiences and rave reviews. She’ll be bringing back the iconic Kenny-and-Dolly Christmas magic in November 2026—stay tuned for showtimes!

Christa is a regular performer with Spirit of Newfoundland Productions and Perchance Theatre Company. She will be playing Queen Iduna in TaDa! Events’ production of Disney’s Frozen, running March 8–14 at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John’s. All of these things are wonderful, but getting to share the stage with Andy Jones and Kevin McDonald is the real winner here—thank you to RCA Theatre Company for making this dream come true!

Nick Hamlyn

Nick Hamlyn is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, and actor from Corner Brook, NL. After 15+ years as a gigging bar musician, he has been overjoyed to enter the theatre scene. He has appeared in Off-Broadway Players productions of RENT, We Will Rock You, American Idiot, Brightstar and most recently, Groundhog Day. With his passion for genre-hopping, he has fronted bands for the Rotary Arts Tribute series, producing and performing tributes to, Leonard Cohen, Fleetwood Mac, John Prine, Stan Rogers, The Beatles, Hank WIlliams, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and more. Most recently he performed in Neddy Norris Night and Hero Dog at the 2025 Gros Mourne Theatre Festival.

Aaron Tarnow

Aaron Tarnow (he/they) is a freelance theatre technician based in New York City, where he works most regularly at the Green Room 42 and at the Magnet Theater, where he is also the house drummer. He has also done a lot of work in Pittsburgh, PA, where he went to school, including building multiple comedy theatres and works of immersive theatre (back when they were cool, he swears). His passion is at the intersection of musical theatre and comedy, so his favorite career work (besides Kevin McDonald Superstar, of course) has included such unacclaimed shows as the Justin and Jerome Experience and JFLE – neither

Join Us for the Long Hall!

RCA has embarked upon an ambitious fundraising campaign to build on its remarkable history. Our commitment to the pillars of Live, Local, and Creative, have resulted in some of our province’s greatest theatrical works, by artists who have gone on to national acclaim.

We offer meaningful engagement and full expression of the diverse voices that make up our province today: some have been here for many years, some we are just welcoming now, and some were here long before us.

We are seeking investment to continue telling our provinces unique stories in a facility that is both historic and yet fully equipped to meet the needs of today’s creative producers and the audiences that gather to experience their work.

Specifically, RCA is seeking funds to deliver on three important and necessary objectives: Live Theatre, Capital Improvements, and Building a Creative Workforce, with the ultimate goal of raising $500,000.

To date we have raised over 20% of those funds, starting with a most generous donation from the Perlin Family Trust. Join us to ensure that live theatre, of the caliber RCA is known for, continues its remarkable history.
