Although this production draws deeply from real events, lived
experiences, and interviews, the playwright has chosen to reimagine
the story through the fictional community of Lilly Harbour. In doing
so, the play creates space for interpretation, variation, and emotional
truth beyond literal fact. What unfolds onstage is not documentary,
but a work of fiction rooted in the realities that inspired it

From the Artistic Animateur

Welcome to the final production of RCAT’s 2025-26 Season. It is an honour to bring you SHE IS HERE by Marquita Walsh, and I would like to welcome and thank in particular the family, townspeople, and first responders among our audience whose lives were forever changed by the real events that inspired this play. Thank you for your generosity throughout this piece’s development, and thank you for your courage in joining us today.

It would be easy, in our true crime-obsessed society, for any story about this real tragedy to run the risk of sensationalizing events. In developing SHE IS HERE, Marquita has taken the direct opposite approach, writing with the utmost care and compassion for Samantha’s memory, for her family, and for her community. Marquita has generously drawn from her own memories as a child on the sidelines of an unfolding disaster, and in the expert hands of Jillian Keiley, along with a cast and creative team that includes some of our province’s very finest artists, SHE IS HERE helps to ensure that Samantha’s memory will not be forgotten. Sadly, a story about femicide is no less relevant twenty-six years after Samantha’s passing, and in many ways the play is a warning and a wake-up call, told with a deeply complicated love for this place we call home. -Meghan Greeley

From the Director

A Note on the Design: Inspired by Fleur de Lys To visit Fleur de Lys on the Baie Verte Peninsula is to be struck by the  extraordinary way the town and harbour are held in the embrace of magnificent evergreen-covered hills. Three of these hills—known locally as the Hummocks—form the trifoil shape that gives the town its name. The woods have always been my favourite place. For many of us raised outside cities, the woods were where growing up unfolded most freely: tobogganing and skidoo tracks, hide-and-seek, first romances, long hikes with dogs, and brave nights spent in tents. But twenty-five years ago, on one horrific night, the woods in Fleur de Lys became a terrifying place. When a child is taken in a town everyone believed to be safe, the rupture is profound. It brutalizes a family and shatters an entire community’s faith in the world around them. In imagining this production, I found myself asking: how does a place recover when a moment of violence turns a beloved landscape against itself? How can a place once marked by fear become safe again? In opening the extraordinary Sam’s Place Café, Samantha Walsh’s mother, Millie, fought fiercely to preserve not only the memory of her daughter, but also the spirit of her community. The benches in our design are a salute to the creative and inspiring wooden benches and tables and walls in the cafe, hand hewn out of love. The trees brought into this production are offered as a tribute to the evergreen vigil and embrace that endures in Fleur de Lys still.

I am grateful to Marquita for inviting me to help bring this play to life, and to this beautiful team of theatre makers who spend their lives trying to make our world a little kinder, a little truer, and a little more beautiful.
– Jillian Keiley

From the Playwright

I was born and raised in Fleur de Lys, a community of 300 people on the northwest tip of Newfoundland—known for its tranquility, its music, and its deep sense of care for one another. I was eight years old when Samantha Walsh went missing. For eighteen days, I watched as my father, my Uncle
Tom, and the entire community searched—combing every inch of the harbour and surrounding land. In the years that followed, I struggled to understand the gravity of what had happened, and to articulate the quiet but lasting impact it had on my young mind. Twenty years later, I began writing
She Is Here. At first, I was writing for Samantha, and for Fleur de Lys. I believe that what happened there—to Samantha and to her family—should never be forgotten. But somewhere along the way, the work became something else. I began writing for my own life.
During the creation of this play, and through the therapy I was engaged in alongside it, I was formally diagnosed with Complex PTSD, ADHD, Major Depression, and an eating disorder. Writing She Is Here revealed the ways trauma had shaped my life—often invisibly, but profoundly. There were times I didn’t think I would finish the play. I stepped away to focus on healing, and in that space, I began writing music. My debut solo album, Nightshades, was created alongside the final drafts of this work, offering an emotional outlet to process what had long been held inside. Music from that album now forms part of the live soundtrack of the play. This work is, at its core, an act of remembrance—but also of survival, and of hope.

I would like to extend my deepest thanks to Millie Walsh for her blessing and support; to Uncle Tom Walsh; to my parents, Sherry and Len Walsh; and to my cousins Devina Alward and Jill Dempsey for their generosity in sharing their memories. Thank you to Constable Patrick McNeal, and to my mentors Nicole Rousseau, Robert Chafe, Meghan Greeley, Jillian Keiley, and Mary Lou Stuckless—your guidance has been invaluable. I am deeply grateful to my friends and collaborators at RCA Theatre for standing by me and allowing me to work at a safe and supported pace, and to this brave and generous cast for holding this story with such compassion, dignity, and care. I will never forget creating this piece with you. Jillian—words cannot express my gratitude and love. Your kindness, friendship, mentorship, and leadership inspire me every day. Thank you to Arts NL for their belief in this project and in my work as an artist. Devon, Mihalis, Jerry and Faye, thank you for your support and friendship. To my music collaborators and cowriters on Nightshades—Kalem, Ian, Justin, Scott, Elliot, and Nick—thank you for your talent, your friendship, and for helping me create a space where I could write myself back to life. And to my family Mom, Dad, Nick, Dell, Beck, for their constant love and support. Josh—thank you for being Home. – Marquita Walsh

RCA has embarked upon an ambitious fundraising campaign to build on its remarkable history. Our commitment to the pillars of Live, Local, and Creative, have resulted in some of our province’s greatest theatrical works, by artists who have gone on to national acclaim.

We offer meaningful engagement and full expression of the diverse voices that make up our province today: some have been here for many years, some we are just welcoming now, and some were here long before us.

We are seeking investment to continue telling our provinces unique stories in a facility that is both historic and yet fully equipped to meet the needs of today’s creative producers and the audiences that gather to experience their work.

Specifically, RCA is seeking funds to deliver on three important and necessary objectives: Live Theatre, Capital Improvements, and Building a Creative Workforce, with the ultimate goal of raising $500,000.

To date we have raised over 20% of those funds, starting with a most generous donation from the Perlin Family Trust. Join us to ensure that live theatre, of the caliber RCA is known for, continues its remarkable history.
