A staged reading of Abraham Sacrifiant – an early modern French play recently translated to modern English for the first time ever by Memorial University Professor Anne Graham.

Following this premier public reading of the piece, a talk-back discussion will follow about the text, translation, and work-shopping process.

Written by Théodore de Bèze in 1550, Abraham sacrifiant, is a seminal French Renaissance play. Its dramatization of the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac represents a watershed moment in the history of theatre. At a time when medieval dramatic forms were being abandoned for those more ancient, Bèze created a tragedy from a biblical story that was central to medieval play cycles. Abraham sacrifiant has resonated with many audiences and the history of its staging in French has been virtually unbroken since the 16th century. This translation marks the first time it will be accessible to audiences in modern English.
