Breathing the Same Air
by Sharon King-Campbell
directed by Azal Dosanjh
featuring Sharon King-Campbell, Paul Power, and Amanda Vallis

“Where were you when it all shut down?”

For theatre artists, COVID-19 was not simply an interruption in work; it was the suspension of a way of life. To get back to the stage, we brought in masks, gave up intermissions, provided hand sanitizer, checked temperatures at the gate… whatever we had to do to make it possible to gather again. But what are the costs of those measures, and what can we learn from them?

In Breathing the Same Air, verbatim theatre meets socially-distanced-cast-party as we explore the impact of COVID-19 protocol on the live theatre experience.

This piece is part of Sharon’s PhD thesis work at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and audiences will be invited to fill out an optional questionnaire after the performance.

This work is supported by the MUNL Office of Public Engagement, the Institute of Social and Economic Research, and the J.R. Smallwood Foundation. The proposal for this research has been reviewed by the Interdisciplinary Committee on Ethics in Human Research and found to be in compliance with Memorial University’s ethics policy.
