The majority of the Nickels’ festival screenings will be available to watch both in person at the LSPU Hall or online on demand. Both methods will follow the same schedule. For example, the Horror Night screening will take place in person at the LSPU Hall on Thursday at 9:30pm, and that screening will also become available to watch on demand online at that time.

IN PERSON:

All in-person screenings will take place on the main stage at the LSPU Hall at 3 Victoria Street, St. John’s. Because space is limited we recommend booking your seats in advance, and you can do that by phone at 709-753-4531 or online. Tickets are pay-what-you-can. Any amount is appreciated to help us with filmmaker screening fees and other festival expenses. If you purchase tickets online for in-person shows, there are designated Pay-What-You-Can-Amounts in increments of $5. If you call in or come in person to buy tickets, you can indicate how much you wish to pay regardless of the online increments.

Beate Sits in the Bathroom in Silence
At a house party a middle-aged woman sits in the bathroom in silence. Primarily a portrait of the woman, the film offers us with a moment that is deliberately constructed to raise more questions than it answers. Director: Valerie Knill • Germany • 2 mins

A poem by Paula Harris is brought to life with a matter-of-fact tone that reflects how many of us manage to keep going when facing disappointment. In Darkness
A girl wakes up in the middle of the night to the sounds of her father’s angry voice. As she creeps out of her room to find out more, she sees him hurling accusations and threats in her mother’s direction while she silently sits there. Paykereh (The Statue)
A surprisingly dark stop-motion animation about the relationship between an artist and his medium. A sculptor literally struggles with the clay he works with, eventually realising that in order to make something new he has to collaborate. Young Sarah’s mother is grappling with challenges to her mental health and her father is increasingly pressured at work. Influenced by the darker and more uncomfortable elements of relationships in modern times, this is a film about what goes on behind closed doors in what seems like a perfect home. Dirty Donna & the Penis Paintings
There’s no disputing Canadian painter Donna Ibing’s gifts as an artist, and her nudes have been accepted with great enthusiasm. Or, rather, some of them. Unfortunately, Donna prefers to paint male nudes, which presents a problem: the penis. With pieces entitled “Trip Dyck”, “Rod & Reel”, “Handful”, and the brilliant “Erection”, artist Donna uses humour to mitigate our problem with the organ.
