October 27, 2013 @ 8:00 pm
Sound Symposium and the Friends of India Present:
Global Bollywood is an eclectic set of songs highlighting the influence the world music influences on Indian film music. The show features songs that range from jazz to the 60s sounds of the Beatles, Eastern music to Disco, and Reggae to Celtic, performed by homegrown artist Bageshree Vaze (vocals) and a cast of St. John’s musicians: Bill Brennan (keyboards), Brad Jefford (guitar), Mark Peddle (Bass), Scott Mansfield (drums), Chris Harnett (flute/saxophone) — and Vineet Vyas (tabla drums).
Just as Hollywood evolved following World War II, the Hindi film industry flourished by adapting the musical format which featured songs and dances, giving rise to prolific music composers who defined a unique Indian sound. Composers such as C. Ramachandran, Shankar Jaikishan and RD Burman were heavily influenced by Big Band Jazz, orchestral arrangements, and Latin percussion. In the 70s, 80s and 90s, film music directors Bappi Lahiri, Biddu and AR Rahman utilized other genres of music such as Disco, Reggae and Celtic music.
