September 19 – September 21, at 8 PM | September 22, at 2 PM

What happens when a nice girl gets mixed up with an instrument from the wrong side of the
band? Find out in Girl Meets Tuba: written and performed by Karen Bulmer (Newfoundland
Symphony Orchestra, MUN) and directed by Alison Woolridge (Mamma Mia!, Oil and Water).
Funny and poignant, the show weaves storytelling with music to reflect Karen’s on-again-offagain
relationship with the tuba.
“The talented performer has a gift for telling a very personal story and, in the process, gets
her audience to “Think tuba!” – Noel Gallagher, The London Free Press

Karen Bulmer is a tuba player and writer living in St. John’s, NL. She has performed versions
of Girl Meets Tuba at fringe festivals in Winnipeg, MB and London, ON, and at the Toronto
Music Garden. Her original radio piece, Joined at the Lip, has aired on both CBC Radio and
on NPR in the United States. In 2007, she was invited to speak and perform at the annual
ideaCity conference in Toronto. Karen is the Principal Tuba of the Newfoundland Symphony
Orchestra and an Associate Professor at Memorial University.
Girl Meets Tuba runs in the Cox & Palmer Second Space at the LSPU Hall from September
19-21 at 8pm with a matinee on September 22 at 2pm. Tickets are $15. For tickets or more
