SYNOPSIS: Not screening this award-winning documentary at our festival would be pretty close to criminal. A wise co-production, Atlantic follows the rise and fall of three small fishing communities in Ireland, Norway, and Newfoundland. We are all participants in a global debate about resource extraction, and so it is that these three sites reflect varied responses to that vexed subject. Some things are universally true, of course: the greedy rush to harvest the sea has endangered the sea’s supply of fish. Oil extraction has also had deleterious effects on the poor beleaguered Atlantic and its bounty. Narrated by Emmy-award winning actor Brendan Gleeson, Atlantic doesn’t just describe the badness; it also shines a light on more sustainable futures, and on the lessons we need to learn from the mistakes of the past. Stunningly shot, Atlantic requires no Gravol® to enjoy its buoyant journey.
