SYNOPSIS: Ann Marie Fleming is a long-time festival darling, having graced our screens with her totally brilliant animated shorts, always first-class executions of illustrative storytelling. Frankly, we have never ever seen anything quite like this before. Here she ramps up her genius to Animation 2.0 with Window Horses, an exquisite feature that tells the story of Rosie Ming, a young Canadian of Chinese/Persian descent. Rosie is a dreamer, longing for a creative life far from her hovering Chinese grandparents by whom she was raised. Fortune hands her an invitation to a poetry festival in Iran. Partly because of her own ethnic roots, she boldly travels there, meeting a collection of international artists of one type or another. Encounters with several of these become part of her emerging formation as a poet and a woman. Sandra Oh voices Rosie with flawlessly vulnerable credibility. Don McKellar and Ellen Page voice other characters whose identities are as real as any in a live drama. This is an uncannily gripping act of storytelling, one of the finest of its kind.
